Class Calendar: October 20th to October 27th

Monday, October 20th (H)
• Due: “Rhetoric in the Community.”
• Class: So how was the PSAT? Did you survive? Well, you’re here, aren’t you? Review annotation skills; share exercises; lesson on diction (Anglo-Saxon vs. Latinate).

Tuesday, October 21st (F)
• Due: Vocabulary exercises for Unit #3.
• Class: Continue lesson on Anglo-Saxon vs. Latinate diction.

Wednesday, October 22nd (S)
• Class does not meet today. Just as well, since there are shortened period for Health & Safety Awareness Day.

Thursday, October 23rd (U)
• Due: Read “Once More to the Lake” by E.B. White and “The Santa Ana” by Joan Didion in 40 Model Essays.

Annotate thoroughly and thoughtfully by writing in the book (if it's your own copy) or using post-its (if it’s mine … and preferably not the super sticky kind; they’re really hard on the paper to remove!). Through your annotations, try to address the points raised in the "Method and Structure" and "Language" questions following each essay. The questions are really, really good; it's why we chose this book for our course reader. You don't need to confine yourself to those topics, but at least touch base with most of the questions. You may find it helpful to read the essays once through quickly for an overall impression, then read the questions and annotate. They’re short. It won’t kill you to read them twice, I promise.

• Class: Discussion of the essays; understanding the descriptive mode.

Friday, October 24th (M)
• Due: Read and annotate “Silent Dancing” by Judith Ortiz Cofer and “The Way to Rainy Mountain” by M. Scott Momaday.
• Class: The dominant impression and point of view; discussion of the essays; Cartesian coordinates and diction.

Monday, October 27th (T)
• Due: Complete a “one-pager” (directions are on the back of your calendars) in the descriptive mode on any of the following topics: p. 39, #1, 2, or 3; p. 49, #1 or 2, p. 57, #1 or 2.
• Class: Using description as a mode of development; peer consultation of one-pagers.

Note I’m currently planning a vocabulary quiz on Unit #3 for Tuesday, if all goes according to schedule.
