Class Calendar: March 2nd to March 9th

Monday, March 2nd
• Snow day! Build snowmen, drink hot cocoa, and all that jazz.

Tuesday, March 3rd (W)
• Due: Second half of literature circle book with ten sticky or dialectic notes.
• Class: Discuss literature circle books; collaborative style inventory.

Wednesday, March 4th (H)
• Due: Copying exercise (about a page, must be handwritten); read and annotate all essays in “Division and Analysis” (Prager, Visser, Sanders).
• Class: Class discussion focusing on “Our Barbies, Ourselves” and “The Men We Carry”; “defamiliarization” exercise.

Thursday, March 5th (F)
• Due: Read and annotate the essay “Shaping Argument” (handed out in class); read and annotate all essays in “Classification” (Baker, Tannen, Ericsson).
• Class: Class discussion focusing on “The Ways We Lie.”

Friday, March 6th (S)
• Class does not meet.

Monday, March 9th (U)
• Due: Style imitation paper is due; I will also collect literature circle books to review notes. Read and annotate all essays in “Process Analysis” (Eighner, Lamott, Mitford).
• Class: Share style imitations; class discussion focusing on “Embalming Mr. Jones.”

Note: During the next few days as we wrap up 40 Model Essays, I would like to turn the task of leading discussion over to the class. To that end, I will assign you in small groups to upcoming essays. Your task is to prepare – in written form that I can collect – a set of three to four meaningful questions for class discussion. Bring these to class the day that your essay is assigned for discussion and be prepared to do a little moderating. Discussions will take approximately half of the class period. Obviously, no late days allowed since this is the substance of our lesson! Assignments follow:

• Division: “Our Barbies, Ourselves” and “The Men We Carry” – Alie, Will, Matt
• Classification: “The Ways We Lie” – Kristina, Sara A., Talia, Nick
• Process Analysis: “Embalming Mr. Jones” – Simon, Rose, Drew
• Comparison: “Disability” (pair with “Dumpster Diving”) – Lilia, Amanda S., Sara N.
• Definition: “The Meanings of a Word” – Alessandra, Elisabeth, Katia
• Cause & Effect: “The Tipping Point” and “Sex, Drugs, Disasters” – Adam, Amanda C., Aly
